Mercedes-AMG GT R” is one of the sportiest names a sports car could have. Of course, choosing such a name sets the bar very high, but AMG is a company that knows what they are doing, and the GT R lives up to all expectations. The base version of the car, the Mercedes-AMG GT, is a grand tourer (as suggested by the name), meaning that it was quick but was less performance-oriented, aiming at a good compromise between performance and luxury (and comfort). The GT R is the high-performance version, removing the “unnecessary” pieces of convenience and luxury in favor of better performance. This is very clearly a driver’s (or racer’s) car. It may not be the version you want to daily drive, but it’s definitely the car you want to be in on a track day.

Exterior and Interior
The 2019 Mercedes-AMG GT R takes clear inspiration from the SLS AMG, sharing its long-hood, wide-stance proportions and fastback roofline while adding its own aggressive identity. Unique elements include the vertical-slat Panamericana grille, enlarged air intakes, revised diffusers, and an adjustable rear wing — all of which underscore its track-focused character. Stripped of some luxury features to save weight, the GT R offers a purer driving experience while still allowing buyers to add back select options. This example was specified with both AMG Exterior Carbon Fiber Packages I & II, a Matte Carbon Fiber Crossbar, and Matte Carbon Fiber Interior Trim, blending motorsport style with everyday usability. Finished in Jupiter Red with red seat belts and a black Nappa/Dinamica Exclusive interior, it stands out visually while performance options like the AMG High-Performance Composite Braking System and 19”/20” forged twin 5-spoke wheels ensure capability on the track. Comfort and convenience are not forgotten, with the Burmester Surround Sound System, Convenience Package, and Active Distance Assist Distronic making it as enjoyable for road trips as it is for spirited drives.

Engine
The GT R isn’t just a standard GT with some extra carbon fiber on it. For starters, the handcrafted M178 4.0L BiTurbo V8 produces significantly more horsepower. It has the exhaust manifolds and turbocharges mounted between the 2 cylinder banks of the engine to minimize turbo lag. This engine, combined with the AMG Speedshift DCT 7-speed transmission gets the GT R to 60mph in a (factory claimed) 3.5s. The weight shedding, suspension upgrades and new aerodynamic components help it to handle well through the corners as well.
